About Ganesh Chaturthi

About Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Ganesh (Ganesh, Ganesha, and Ganpati), It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, starting on the shukla Chaturthi. Typically, the day usually falls between 20th August to 15th September. The Festival last for 1, 3, 5, 7 or10 days ending on Anant Chaturdashi. Most people keep Ganpati for 10 days.

Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshiped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. While celebrated all over the India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Andra Pradesh and other areas in which there were former states of Maratha Empire.

According to the Legend, Lord Shiva the Hindu God of resolution was away at a war. His wife Parvati, wanted to bathe and having no-one to guard the door to her house, conceived of the idea of creating a son who could guard her. Parvati created Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door and instructed him not to let anyone enter.

When her husband, Shiva returned, the child who had never seen him stopped him. Shiva severed the head of the child and entered his house. Parvati, learning that her son was dead, was distraught and asked Shiva to revive him. Shiva cut off the head of an elephant and fixed it on the body of Ganesha.

Shri Lokmanya Tilak

Ganesh Chaturthi History

In 1893, Loakmanya Tilak reshaped the annual Ganesh festival from private family celebrations into a grand public event.

Loakmanya Tilak visualized the cultural importance of this deity and popularized Ganesha Chaturthi as a “National Festival” to bridge the gap between the Brahmins and the non-Brahmins and find an appropriate context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them.

Two or three months prior to Ganesh Chaturthi, life-like clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated & depict Lord Ganesh in various poses. The size of these statues may vary from ¾ of an inch to over 35 feet.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapada Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesh is worshiped. On the 11th Day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, DJ’s singing to be immersed in a river, sea or pond.
